Podcast #36 – The Bacon: Sampling Todd’s DVDs

Once more, unto The Bacon, dear friends! Still flying in missing Pig formation, this episode of the Film Pigs Podcast focuses on Todd Robert Anderson’s terrible mental illness: his obsession with collecting DVDs and Blu-rays. Sequestered in a room lined with shelves of plastic discs, Skelton pulls 12 random movies and demands Todd explain himself before it’s too late. It’s kind of like Intervention, but very lazy and nothing is really accomplished.

This time, on a very special episode of The Film Pigs Podcast:

  • 0:00:00 – Intro
  • 0:01:30 – The Bacon: Sampling Todd’s DVDs
  • 1:01:45 – Outro

  1. TREMORS! YAY!

    I tattooed a graboid on my arm…
well, someone else did it, but I paid him to.
And it’s wrestling with Ash from Evil Dead.

    And I’m not single. Weird.

  2. Whoa, commented before I listened to the podcast, didn’t realize you had the whole AttackPack! Anyway, completely agree with your assessment of Tremors and Tremors 2. I like Tremors 3 because I feel like it’s totally over-the-top campy and kinda works in that way. I thought Tremors 4 was terrible, but it has one of my favorite graboid kills, when one character buries a saw in the dirt vertically, then uses the dynamite or something to force the monster to cut itself in half with the saw. Brilliant.

    1. You know, it’s been awhile since I watched the last two movies. I may very well like the third better as I do remember the prequel was pretty slow. I do remember being very disappointed by the third because it was up to the fun standards of Tremors 2 (which was surprisingly entertaining given its DTV status.) Eventually, I will revisit!

  3. Yay! New filmpigs for my portable media device.

Top tip for Todd – don’t buy the Tremors Blu-ray. One of the worst transfers ever. Stick with your DVD on this one.

    1. Thanks for the heads up. I actually bought the “Attack Pack” because when it was released that was the first 16×9 transfer of the movie. (I looked at the sequels as “bonus features” because after Tremors 2 there really is no reason to own these things.) I’m pretty sure it remains the only 16×9 version on DVD. I am not surprised that the Blu-ray is shitty, given how many popular titles are dumped onto the format without care in hopes that consumers will assume it’s waaaaaaaaaay better just because it says “Blu-ray” on the cover. Like I said on the podcast, I don’t upgrade to Blu-ray unless it is either the only way to get a 16×9 transfer or I know for sure the movie was painstakingly remastered (Jaws, Raiders, the upcoming Lawrence of Arabia.) Which is why I don’t have something like “Do the Right Thing” on Blu-ray, yet I do have “Hellraiser: Bloodline.” (Yes, I like the theatrically released Hellraiser movies, even this one…great gore!)

  4. I think you guys can just skip the Bacon business and go ahead and do some regular Film Pigs shows while Falk’s out of town. Much as I like Falk, it’s not like the show sucks when it’s just the two of you. If it feels like you need a third person to bounce off of, you could always bring in one of your other pals as a substitute pig for a show or two.

    1. The main issue with the podcast right now is that doing the regular show with all the segments requires much more pre-production work than picking a single topic to explore (writing those dumb games takes time!). Right now, we’re putting that time & energy into the GeekNation show, which is why our podcasts/commentaries have fallen off our semi-regular bi-weekly schedule. We’ll probably keep doing Bacon episodes, but I think bringing in a guest is a good idea for both the podcast and the commentaries. At least until we can figure out a good remote recording solution.

I was investigating options for Skype recording but haven’t yet found a good (easy) method that provides acceptable sound quality and works across mixed PC/Mac computers. If anybody has any suggestions in that area, I’d love to hear about it.

      1. I guess I would suggest Skyping with headphones and have Falk record his own audio separately. Then send the raw audio file (.aiff or .wav I spose) and mix them together? I think it would work as long as Falk’s mic didn’t pick up your audio or vice versa.

  5. I rarely buy DVDs (or blu-rays) these days.

Back in the day I bought everything that vaguely interested me. I ended up giving about 100 of them to charity.

These days I just keep the ones that mean something to me. In fact I’m just about ready for another purge due to my impending move to another house.

  6. Your discussion of Do the Right Thing was a revelation. I saw this in the theater with my college buddies and came out marveling at it. I said at the time that Danny Aiello stole the movie by playing a guy who was confused and had mixed feelings about race, because Spike Lee probably wrote the character as a straight up racist. It was cool to hear that there are great extras on the disk that clearly confirm that.
