Straight-to-DVD Corner with Tonn Slingdog: Alien Raiders

Okay, for Christmas this year I’ve found a little alien creature feature that should satiate anyone like me who has an undending hunger for this particular subgenre.  And yes, the movie’s concept is as generic as the title, and it adds nothing new to all the stories it rips off.  However, its producers and director clearly understood the limits of their budget and managed to pull off a totally entertaining little B-picture that looks pretty good and is well acted.

Like the Mist, the entire story takes place in a supermarket, and there are a few twists and turns to keep you guessing as to what might happen next.  There are a few fun monster effects, and its short running time will actually leave you wanting a few more minutes.   Maybe eight or even nine. It isn’t until well after you’ve finished the picture and your fourth scotch that you will suddenly realize, “There wasn’t one original idea in the whole damn movie!”  But who cares?  It’s a great time.

And here is a point of interest that will most likely only interest me because I am the only person it pertains to but I’m writing it anyway: the supporting character Logan is portrayed by Tom Kiesche (who manages to give this throwaway character with little screen time some very discernable layers) and he actually wrote a play I did back in New York more than fifteen years ago.  It was good to see him!

And I don’t care that you don’t care.

Love always, Todd

    1. I’m glad you found it! It was great to see you in the movie, and I’ve been seeing you in some commercial where you are pretty damn funny…I hope Mr. Rock was okay with the capsule review…it was a fun picture. You working with him again sometime?
