Podcast #32 – Gory Special Effects

We’re back! Better late than never! Unless you hate us, in which case this is terrible news! This time, we’re talking “gags”, or gory special effects. You know, the real gross stuff that gives you that quality nausea you can’t get from computer generated barf. Plus, the latest useless movie news, a movie jail trial with a surprise twist ending, a bizarre line reading, a trivia game that is actually a honest-to-God trivia game and not some stupid nonsense made up by Skelton, and more!

This time, on a very special episode of The Film Pigs Podcast:

  • 0:00:00 – Intro
  • 0:00:58 – Movie News
  • 0:03:10 – Host Todd Robert Anderson presents this episode’s theme: Gory Special Effects
  • 0:22:43 – Movie Jail
  • 0:33:13 – The Nic Cage Memorial Bizarre Line Reading
  • 0:37:16 – Straight To DVD Corner With Tonn Slingdog
  • 0:43:45 – Trivia!
  • 1:08:28 – The Bottom 5: Most Disappointing Horror
Movies That Promised Heavy-Duty Gag Shocks

  1. Now I just want to watch ‘Braindead’. That movie, and a lot of scenes from ‘Hellraiser’ stand out in my mind. And that scene from ‘The Thing’ with the row of men tied down and the one at the end mutating…

Too many to name, but I can quickly say that not very many CG gore effects stand out. I agree with Stee about the mind somehow automatically sensing something not being real, even if it is very realistic.

A hard game, but I got a kick out of listening to you guys struggle. 🙂 (I only knew about five of them immediately.) I never thought about how many horror franchises there are.

Oh, geez, ‘Jaws 3-D’ was hilarious. XD That floating fish head at the beginning was the red flag.

  2. Actually, just to add to that, I don’t know if that infamous scene from ‘127 Hours’ counts. I know it’s not a horror movie, but I could just barely manage to get through the whole scene.

  3. I think with practical effects there’s an uncanny valley thing happening where the fakeness can make them more horrible. You know it’s a magic trick, but you don’t know exactly how it was done in the moment. I rewatched The Fly a few months ago, and I’m sure in that final transformation you could make the crazy puppet look more “realistic” with CGI… but then you wouldn’t see Brundlefly’s slimy skin sloughing off around Geena Davis’ feet and gah.

On which note: Herschell Gordon Lewis! The Wizard of Gore taught me that all you need is gallons of karo syrup, food coloring, and sausage. It goes from laughable to unbearable so quickly. (And then back to laughable, but the gross-out scenes are effective.)

  4. Excellent podcast. Fun game, made me realize which horror franchises I’m not well versed in (let’s just say Warwick Davis is very upset with me).

Some favorite Gore Scenes that don’t belong to Tom Savini:

The death by basketball scene in DEADLY FRIEND
Stacy Keach’s Dad vs. a runaway circular saw blade in the underrated SUPERSTITION
The vomiting one’s guts out scene in GATES OF HELL
    The bandsaw scene in INTRUDER
The bear trap scene in SEVERANCE

  5. I am embarrassed to say how well I did in the quiz game. I definitely beat both Steves. Great podcast 🙂
