Straight-to-DVD Corner with Tonn Slingdog: It’s Back!

Yeah, it’s been awhile.  I’d like to say that’s because I’ve been so busy with work I haven’t had time to see any DTV movies, but that’s so very sadly not the case.  The truth is, I’ve seen a shitload and they’ve all been so dull I refused to spend any more time on them, even if complaining may have alleviated the horrible rage that grows inside of me each day.  However, after a terrible dryspell I got lucky!  Two times!  (Hopefully my career will follow suit, goddammit.)

“Cloverfield” Director Set For Pointless “Let The Right One In” Remake

Matt Reeves, of Cloverfield fame, is still plugging away at his American adaptation of Swedish vampire film Let The Right One In. I shudder to think of what’s being changed, because the original was basically flawless. (via io9)

REALLY? Do we really need this? Is it so hard to read subtitles, America? Just thinking about the corporate sheen this remake is going to get is depressing. Rorschach To Play Freddy?

According to BBC News:

Actor Jackie Earle Haley has signed up to play iconic killer Freddy Krueger in a remake of the 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street film series, reports have said.

Industry magazine The Hollywood Reporter said the Watchmen actor has landed the starring role, which was originally played by Robert Englund.

If this is true, then this is a remake I would actually want to see.  Didn’t care for Watchmen as a movie, but Haley was awesome as Rorschach. And I can actually see him as Freddy.

Commentary #25 – The Happening (2008)

M. Night Shyamalan’s first R-rated movie! M. Night Shyamalan’s first R-rated movie! Those were the words that sent people to theaters in – what’s the opposite of “droves” – to experience some stupid thing about angry plants making people walk backwards before killing themselves. And Marky Mark as a science teacher. We know he’s smart because M. Knight makes him wear an awkward sweater vest.

Finally crossing the line into Ed Wood territory, Shyamalan actually expects the audience to feel fear and tension when he stages his characters running away from light breezes. Oh, and instead of a stupid twist ending, the ending is just stupid. In the end, The Happening has all the terror and gravity of a fabric softener commercial AND a criminally underused Alan Ruck. We love Alan Ruck. (IMDb)
